CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.—The Clarks Summit University Alumni Association has named Steve Viars, pastor of Faith Church, Lafayette, Indiana, Alumnus of the Year. The awards ceremony will take place during the school’s chapel Sept. 30.
Steve graduated from Clarks Summit University in 1982 and began serving at Faith Church in 1987. His “gifted teaching ministry, enthusiasm for the Word of God, and organizational skills are instrumental in equipping Faith Church,” Clarks Summit University says.
Along with his pastorate, Steve is director of the Faith Legacy Foundation and serves on the boards of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, Biblical Counseling Coalition, Vision of Hope, and the Faith Community Development Corporation. He is also the author of several books, including Putting Your Past in Its Place, Loving Your Community, and Overcoming Bitterness and is a contributing writer in The Pastor: A Guide for God’s Faithful Servant.
“There’s a sense in which I’m living my dream,” Viars says. “When it comes right down to it, that is the truth. I dreamt about being a pastor as a young man, and by God’s grace, that’s exactly what I have the privilege of doing every day. How could it be any better than that?
“I am actually paid to study the Bible. I am paid to work in a local church every day. That is an incredible honor. I think about that all the time. Even . . . just driving into the church, just thanking God for the privilege of being able to serve the Lord full-time. That’s the way I view it. It’s an honor and it’s a privilege, and I feel incredibly blessed to be able to serve in one of Christ’s churches.”
