Is Job in Genesis 46 the Same Job of the Book of Job?

By August 1, 1997July 16th, 2014No Comments

We appreciated your answers to the questions that were asked in the April 1997 Baptist Bulletin on the book of Job. The question we would ask is, Could it be possible that the Job who is found in Genesis 46:13 is the same Job of the book of Job?

Thank you for your kind comment. No, the person isn’t the same. The person listed in Genesis 46:13 is Jashub, third son of Issachar and founder of the family of the Jashubites (see Numbers 26:24 and 1 Chronicles 7:1). He was also called Iob, and somehow this name became Job through a misprint or corruption of language. A number of translations and versions have used the proper name or made note of the name in the margins.
