Reaching Neighbors and Connecting with Believers

First responders enjoy breakfast at First Baptist, Nebraska City.

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb.—First Baptist Church is reaching its neighbors with the gospel while connecting with believers in its community. On Palm Sunday, First Baptist prepared a hearty breakfast for first responders in Nebraska City and surrounding areas. The event included a drawing for a Fireproof DVD, a devotional book for firefighters, and gift cards for local businesses and restaurants.

Two weeks earlier, First Baptist held a bilingual service with Fe Eficaz, a Spanish-speaking church plant in Nebraska City. Pastor Juan Fernandez spoke in English and Spanish, everyone sang a few familiar songs, and the English-language congregation tried to learn the Spanish translation of the song “10,000 Reasons.”

This summer, First Baptist will reach families with young children through a sports camp. The church hosts its weeklong Sports Challenge camp every year for kids ages 5–12. The kids play football, basketball, or soccer; navigate inflatable obstacle courses; hear a Bible lesson; and memorize Bible verses.

Keith Hunt is pastor of First Baptist Church, which has existed since 1855.
