Post Game with Paul Golden

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.—Paul Golden is one busy guy. In addition to his administrative role at Clarks Summit University, Paul serves as a chaplain for not one but two professional sports teams.

During the fall and winter, he is the chaplain for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ AHL affiliate (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins), while in the spring and summer, he serves as chaplain for the New York Yankees’ Triple-A team (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders).

Paul recently added one more thing to his life. Out of his love for ministry and sports came an idea birthed during the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020: hosting a sports and faith podcast.

Paul thought there was room for a podcast featuring Christian athletes and coaches that focuses more on their faith journey than on the X’s and O’s of their respective sports. The podcast features some discussion about the guests’ sports but focuses on what the Lord has done in their lives.

“My goal is to be an encouragement to the listeners to keep walking in their faith as they hear of these athletes growing in their own Christian walk,” Paul says. “I also see this as an evangelistic opportunity in that many of the listeners are not Christ followers (yet) and they are hearing from athletes they admire sharing the difference Jesus Christ has made in their lives.”

Paul Golden talks with Mike Jarvis, former men’s basketball coach at St. John’s University.

In many cases, Paul has a connection to the athletes and wants their stories shared on a broader level. He says it is beneficial to the athletes to use their platforms to share their salvation testimonies. “Besides,” Paul jokes, “people always told me that I have a face made for radio, so doing a podcast was a no-brainer.”

The idea behind the podcast’s name, Post Game, is that after the game (or an athlete’s playing career) what really counts is the athlete’s identity in Christ. Paul jokingly says he thought Pre-Trib, Pre-Mill Post Game was a mouthful and just stuck with Post Game.

The Post Game with Paul Golden podcast started in the spring of 2021 and features guests such as NHL goalie Casey DeSmith, NBA Hall of Famer Pat Williams, a former New York Yankee, an MLB scout who discovered superstar Jacob deGrom, and Team USA Olympic softball player Janie Reed. Each episode features fun and engaging conversations with a Christian athlete or coach about sports, faith, family, fun life stories, and the spiritual lessons learned during the guest’s career.

Paul produces about two episodes each month. To recommend a guest, contact Paul at goldienyy@gmail.com.
