MEDINA, Ohio—First Baptist Church took its worship service outdoors Aug. 21, holding it at the public square in downtown Medina for a congregation of 700 to 800 people.
This is the ninth annual Service on the Square for First Baptist but the third for Pastor John McCaw. He became pastor of First Baptist in 2013, the year the church celebrated its 180th anniversary. He calls this special service “an exciting way to publicly worship God in the heart of our community.”
A worship team provided live music, everyone enjoyed a free lunch and yard games, and 13 people were baptized.
Christians today “are pressured to be private” about their faith, McCaw told the Gazette of Medina County. Service on the Square is important for First Baptist Church, he says, “because we want our people to live their faith out publicly. We love our community and as long as we can have this service, we want to do it.”
