QUINCY, Wash.—Integrating Hispanic believers into First Baptist Church has been progressing lately. About 66 percent of Quincy, a small city of 6,000 people in central Washington, is Hispanic. First Baptist, which has been in Quincy for about 56 years, is accepting Hispanic believers warmly, according to Juan Carlos Magallanes, associate pastor and Hispanic ministries director for Northwest Baptist Home Mission. The church’s morning services are in English, and the evening services are in Spanish, translated into English. Don Valen is senior pastor.
Pastor Magallanes arrived with his family in Quincy from Peru in 2003, invited by First Baptist Church. They had to learn about the culture, language, and the new ways of life while adjusting to separation from others dear to them. First Baptist is trying new ways to reach out to people in the Quincy community, such as teaching people English and Spanish.
