LAPORTE, Calif.—Men throughout California enjoyed a Men’s Retreat at Pilot Lake Camp Sept. 29–Oct. 1. Almost 50 men and boys from 11 churches affiliated with the California Association of Regular Baptist Churches gathered at the beautiful, rustic camp in the Sierra Mountains, 6,100 feet in elevation.

Ron Schrock, keeping with the theme “God, Gold, and Guns,” spoke in four sessions on men’s relationship with God, their Biblical attitude toward possessions, and their Biblical responsibility to protect and provide for their families. Ron Schrock is state representative of the California Association of Regular Baptist Churches. He brings almost 40 years of ministry experience to his role, as he previously served as pastor to five churches in four states.

Panning for gold

To prepare for the event, men were asked to bring not only their Bibles and appetites, but also their guns and a few pans. On the second day of the retreat, the men participated in shooting competitions and learned how to pan for gold—activities that were a big hit.

The Men’s Retreat would not have occurred without Berean Baptist Church, Fairfield, Calif. Art Zacher, pastor of Berean, initiated the event. Dennis Leavell, associate pastor of Orchard Avenue Baptist, Vacaville, Calif., led music. Plans are already under way for next year’s event. In the meantime, the next CARBC men’s retreat will be “Man Up!” at Victory Ranch in Moreno Valley, Oct. 21 and 22.
