Salvation BookletSCHUAMBURG Ill.—A group fifth graders from Mrs. Preuss’ class at Schaumburg Christian School have visited Regular Baptist Press to learn the process of making a book, working to produce a booklet titled “Who Needs Salvation?”

Andrea Farlow, an editor/writer for the children’s curriculum, gave a brief overview of the publishing process. She began by giving each student a name tag with the word “writer” and its definition on the tag. Student groups were given a verse from the Bible that explained a part of salvation. They were asked to write what the verse meant in 3 sentences or less. When the 10 minute writing “deadline” was up, each group received another name tag with the word “editor” and its definition printed on it. The students exchanged their papers with another group and were given an editing “deadline” of 10 minutes.

Ms. Farlow typed their edited copies into the computer while Doug Jennings, a graphic artist with Regular Baptist Press, began explaining his role in the publishing process. Mr. Jennings guided the students as they began to illustrate their writing assignment with paper and markers with a graphic artist “deadline” of 10 minute.

While Mr. Jennings chose the art for each page and put it into a booklet to be printed, the children followed Michael Nolan for an official tour of the facility. The children visited the customer service area, editorial, and graphics. “It was cool to learn how they made our church’s Sunday School Material,” said Emily Davis.

Austin White added, “Didn’t know that it took that many people to make just one book.”

Next, the students walked through the warehouse full of boxes and boxes of books. While in the shipping area they saw things they’d never seen before. Christopher Ting said he thought the shooting stapler was cool, while Sharan Chimbili said she really liked the rotating table that was downstairs.

Jenna Bruchman’s favorite part of the trip was “doing the drawings for the book.” Kyle Thompson commented that he “thought it was pretty fun being able to put the book together and play all the parts.” Each child in Mrs. Preuss’ class received two copies of their new book to share with friends.
