Memorial Day: Honoring America’s Military

By May 23, 2014July 16th, 2014No Comments

This weekend for many is a break from the day-to-day hectic schedule and a chance to get to the lake or the camp site, or just hang around the house and spend time with the family. That is a wonderful reality. We can enjoy quality time with our families and have hours of fun, food, and fellowship. We also have the opportunity to worship freely at our churches without fear of anyone or any governmental official telling us to stop.

We have become so accustomed to this freedom that we sometimes forget the price that was paid so we could be free. I have often stated that freedom is not free. In fact, it is the most expensive blessing we have. Our physical freedom was paid for by the men and women of our military who have laid down their lives to keep us free. Our spiritual freedom comes from the finished work of Jesus Christ at Calvary. He willingly shed His blood for the remission of our sins. The price of freedom is blood. The blood of Jesus Christ paid for our spiritual freedom, and the blood of America’s military has purchased our physical freedom.

On this Memorial Day, as you enjoy your families, please take time to stop and remember the price that was paid so you could enjoy this freedom. Also please continue to pray for our military members who are in harm’s way every day for you and your family. Ask God to protect them and to give them wisdom and success as they fulfill their mission.

Please also pray for Chaplains William Gasser, CHC, USN, and Jeremiah Cates, USA, who are ministering in Afghanistan on this Memorial Day. Pray for their families and ministries and the families of the deployed troops.

My final request is that you and your family take time to pray for the families who are represented by the crosses in the picture that accompanies this article. They have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Their loved one gave their lives so we could enjoy ours. Please pray for them and then live your life for the glory of God so their sacrifice for your freedom will not be in vain.

Enjoy your weekend, but remember the cost!
