WATERLOO, Iowa—Jocelyn Green, a member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, was awarded a Gold Medal by the Military Writers Society of America for her book Battlefields and Blessings: Stories of Faith and Courage from the War in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Her award-winning first book, Faith Deployed: Daily Encouragement for Military Wives was inspired by her appreciation of what military families go through. It was while she was planning Faith Deployed that her agent learned about the Battlefields and Blessings book for Iraq and Afghanistan, and the need for a third coauthor. Jocelyn’s agent suggested her. “And of course I was thrilled to do it because I have a heart for military families and the sacrifices that they make for the rest of us,” says Jocelyn.
Wanting the ministry of Faith Deployed to be ongoing, lasting beyond the 88 days covered by the book’s devotionals, Jocelyn began adding resources to the book’s website, started a Facebook page, and created a blog. The Facebook page has the largest following of military wives on Facebook, with more than 13,900 followers.
Jocelyn’s story demonstrates how God can use one experience and turn it into a ministry that touches thousands. She says, “I was a military wife myself for just one year. One year. I never would have thought, I never would have imagined, that the Lord would be able to use that small amount of time to spur a ministry like this.”
“We have more than a dozen columnists writing regularly for the Faith Deployed website,” says Jocelyn. She feels privileged that the other women are sharing their stories. “They’re good writers, but they’re busy moms, busy military wives who have to hold it together, and they don’t have time to pursue a publishing career like I have done. But they still have really important things to say, so it is an honor and a joy for me to be able to bring their voices in and get them out to the world.”
While Jocelyn is now focusing on the Faith Deployed ministry, plans are in the works for her to cowrite two more books in the Battlefields and Blessings series.
