GREENE, Iowa—The 65th anniversary weekend at Calvary Baptist Church started off with a Saturday evening service focusing on the past. Pastor Ben Hartwig, preaching from 2 Thessalonians 1:3 and 4 in “Praising God for the Past,” drew attention to the congregation’s demonstrating godly characteristics through the years. Several longtime acquaintances of the church—Temple Baptist Church of Charles City, Horton Baptist Church of Waverly, and Faith Baptist Church of Oelwein—shared in rejoicing with the Calvary folks over God’s faithfulness through the years. A dessert fellowship followed.

On Sunday the congregation was privileged to have Joe and Marty Hayes, Iowa Regular Baptist state representative,  for the day. Hayes encouraged the congregation to remember what God had done and to seek to serve Him faithfully in the days ahead. The service also focused on the present—how God is at work today. Pastor Hartwig preached from 2 Thessalonians 2:13–17, “Giving Thanks in the Present.” Several members shared testimonies of their salvation and how God is working in the church. A luncheon was provided by the ladies of the church.

A Sunday afternoon service looked ahead, as Pastor Hartwig preached from 2 Thessalonians 3:1–5 in “Anticipating the Future.” He emphasized the need to keep our eyes fixed upon Christ, and guests shared prayer requests regarding the future.

The 65th anniversary weekend truly encouraged everyone as a church, reflecting on the graciousness of God, His current work in us, and the confidence in God we can have regarding the future. “To God be the glory,” says Calvary Baptist ”for what He has done, what He is doing, and what He will do.”
