Decide the Right Path: How to Choose between Counseling or Coaching
By Brian Cederquist
In the process of improving and growing as ministry leaders, we need to choose the kind of support that will help meet our objectives.
Consider your own needs and goals as a ministry leader. Would Biblical counseling or coaching be a better fit for you? Knowing the differences between the two will help you choose the right help in your ministry journey.
BENEFITS OF BIBLICAL COUNSELING
Takes care of the heart. Counselors probe the core of our intentions and behaviors to help us live in accordance with Biblical teachings. By looking at our hearts via the prism of Scripture, counselors promote personal development and life stewardship.
Guides interactions with others. Counselors help us navigate Biblical principles in our interactions with others. By assessing our actions and reactions, counselors help us manage our lives in manners that please God.
Offers a godly perspective. Counselors assist us in adopting God’s viewpoint on people and circumstances. By helping us see the world as Christ does, counselors help us increase our ability to love God and others.
BENEFITS OF COACHING
Solidifies a goal. Coaches provide an unbiased view of our objectives, assisting in clarifying our goals. Coaches also promote accountability by ensuring that our goals are in line with our divine calling.
Charts a path. Coaches help set up the procedures we must follow to accomplish our objectives. Coaches use their expertise and insight not only to chart a path ahead but also to navigate any roadblocks or modifications.
Helps determine next steps. When we lack clarity, coaches help us determine and prioritize relevant actions. And when we’re waiting for divine guidance, coaches provide instructions to keep us moving ahead so we aren’t held back by ambiguity.
Encourages wise choices. When we face an abundance of possibilities, coaches provide insight and clarity. By asking insightful questions and weighing alternatives, coaches help us make informed, God-exalting decisions.
CONSIDER YOUR REQUIREMENTS AND GOALS
To choose between Biblical counseling and coaching, take your requirements and goals into consideration.
If your path calls for self-reflection, spiritual development, and harmony with God’s plan, a counselor could be the better option. On the other hand, if your emphasis is on decision-making, process improvement, and goal achievement, a coach might be of great help.
Whichever route you take, you are not alone. Seek advice from dependable mentors, pray for discernment, and keep your eyes open to the Holy Spirit’s direction. Accept change, face your obstacles head-on, and keep moving with faith, optimism, and dedication to positive development.
