Guiding Your Flock: A Pastor's Blueprint for Cultivating Love and Connection

By Brian Cederquist

If you’re a new pastor, you might find yourself asking, “Where do I start?”

Fear not, for the key to success lies in teaching your congregation to love God and others.

These two commands are outlined in Matthew 22:36–40: “‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?’ Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”

TWO THINGS TO TEACH YOUR CONGREGATION

Love God

Guide your church to love God passionately, to adore God. This should be your essential focus.

Adoring God involves recognizing His character as revealed in His Word and expressing admiration for who He is.

In every teaching or preaching context, make it a point to adore God. Even in public prayers and personal interactions, first acknowledge a character trait of God found in His Word. For instance, in Matthew 22:36–40, the person talking with Jesus addressed Him as “teacher.” Let’s adore God as the great teacher, appreciating His guidance and wisdom.

Love Others

Guide your church to embrace the rich tapestry of the Bible’s “one another” passages—the New Testament’s truths about interacting with, caring for, and serving one another.

Encourage your congregation to incorporate these principles into their daily lives and to memorize a specific “one another” verse. These intentional acts will contribute to a culture of empathy, active listening, and mutual support in your church.

EMPOWER TRANSFORMATION

Your role as a pastor is pivotal in empowering your congregation to love God and others. Provide guidance, share resources, and cultivate an environment where individuals live out their faith.

By encouraging your congregation to adore God and embrace the “one anothers,” you will be building a thriving, vibrant community of faith.
