WELLINGTON, Ohio—Time flies when you realize Talents For Christ is only a few months away and you still have lots of work to do. For Jessica Joppeck and Zac Singletary, former TFC participants, time is flying once again as they practice for Zac’s senior vocal recital, with Jessica accompanying him.

In 2008 Zac Singletary took part in Talents For Christ for the first time, competing in male voice in the non-scholarship division. A requirement of TFC was to sing one of his competition songs in a service at his home church. “Nerves were not really an issue, since he had sung many times in church, but this time his goal was perfection,” Jessica says. “A mishap during the song really brought his mood down fast. As he headed out of the sanctuary in search of a place to be alone and think for a couple minutes, a member of the church followed him out to encourage him. This small act of kindness turned into a discipleship relationship, which is exactly what Zac’s mom had been praying for.”

In thinking back to that answer to prayer, Jessica is reminded of 1 John 5:14: “Now this is the confidence we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”

Zac received first place in the state competition in 2008. Over the next two years he competed in the college scholarship division and, as a sophomore in 2010, received first place at the state level and first at nationals, held that year in Schaumburg, Ill.

Jessica herself won second place in the piano category in 2004 and attends the same church as Zac—First Baptist Church in Wellington. Now married and the mother of a 1-year-old son, Jessica plays the piano for congregational singing and substitutes for the choir pianist.

“As Zac’s accompanist, it has been an awesome privilege to see Zac grow substantially in his musical ability as well as in his spiritual life,” Jessica says. Their last adventure together will be this month as he performs his senior recital at First Baptist Christian School, Elyria, Ohio. “His energetic and consistent testimony have been an encouragement to me as well as the church family, and he will definitely leave a void as he heads to college.” Zac will attend Faith Baptist Bible College in the fall and plans to become an associate pastor, with a youth and music emphasis.

“It has been awesome to see the church family so involved and interested, which leads back to why Talents For Christ is such a great opportunity,” Jessica says. “It is an opportunity for churches to come behind their young people and disciple them, push them, and encourage them, and an opportunity for teens to learn what it means to be a part of a church family and use their talents to work together for Christ.”
