Improving Your Ministry Skills: October 2008

Make a Difference at the Polls!

Our National Elections will soon occur. As Christians we have a responsibility to influence society through our vote. Church leaders, encourage your people to get involved by…

  • incorporating prayer in your worship services and teaching times for our upcoming elections
  • educating people about what God’s Word says about moral issues and civic responsibility; i.e., abortion, homosexuality, our responsibility as citizens toward our government
  • encouraging members to compare candidates’ stands on issues compared to Biblical standards
  • providing voter registration forms for members to register (Central Baptist in Binghamton, NY, is providing forms at their church facility for the community to register and providing free coffee.)
  • prompting members to request absentee ballots, www.govoteabsentee.org, if they are unable to vote in person

Choosing a Good Church

“Out of all the available options, which church should I attend?”

People choose churches for a multitude of reasons, but do they consider the important reasons? For resources that will help you educate newcomers or church members on the essentials of a good church, see  www.garbc.org and www.regularbaptistpress.org

Fundamentalism Seminar

Baptist Church Planters (BCP) is sponsoring a seminar on The Theology of Fundamentalism, October 28-30, taught by Dr. Kevin Bauder, President of Central Baptist Seminary. For more information, see flyer, The Theology of Fundamentalism, or contact BCP, 440-748-1677.

Dispensational Hermeneutics Council Statement

The Council on Dispensational Hermeneutics has released the Summit Statement on Dispensational Hermenuetics,  a formal summary that resulted from meetings held Sept. 24-25 on the campus of Baptist Bible Seminary, Clarks Summit, Pa.

The formal statement offers affirm and deny statements addressing the interpretive methods that Bible scholars use to discover the meaning of Scripture. The council of traditional dispensational theologians advocates a historical-grammatical interpretation of the Bible, taking each passage literally unless there is strong internal evidence to suggest that the language is figurative. The council meetings featured the presentation of six papers followed by lengthy periods of interaction among the participants. See Baptist Bulletin for summary statement and more info.
