John Hartog II, a pastor and professor, died August 18. He was 87.
John was the founding pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church, Grimes, Iowa, serving from 1995 to 2005. He was also a professor, primarily at Faith Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary.
“He willingly served wherever the Lord led him, which involved working at Faith from 1968-1970, 1977-1984, and 1989 until he retired from teaching in 2018,” the school writes. “The positions he filled at Faith throughout those years include professor of New Testament Studies and Biblical Languages, head librarian, chair of the general education division, director of operations (business office), and director of the Master of Arts in Religion program.”
He planted Maranatha Baptist Church while teaching at Faith, starting the church with a Bible study in his home.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha; two sons, John III and Paul; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
