Homecoming Weekend in Alton, Illinois

Brown Street Baptist Church, Alton, Illinois, is “praising God” for its past 100 years of ministry “and committing the next chapter to Him.”

The church hosted a homecoming weekend Sept. 2–3. The homecoming weekend was one of numerous events the church has been hosting since February to mark its anniversary.

On Saturday, Sept. 2, the congregation and guests met at the church to explore historical booths displaying photos and memorabilia, reunite with former members, and attend a praise and testimony service.

The next day featured several former pastors and assistant pastors speaking during a youth Sunday School class, an adult Sunday School class, and morning and afternoon worship services.

Pastor Daniel Sternquist (left in photo above) took the opportunity to pose for a photo with those former leaders of the church.

Daniel has been pastor of the church only since March, so preparing for the anniversary weekend was “a lot of fun for me,” he says. He learned “a lot of the history of the church” and saw “the church in action.” “But one of the things that keeps popping up time and time again,” he says, is the “church body talking so very highly” of its pastors and assistant pastors and their wives. He thanked those men and their wives for their ministry at the church.

Speaking from the pulpit, Daniel told the congregation, “It’s incredible to look out across this very full auditorium to recognize the way that God has used His church to impact lives over the past 100 years.”

Two weeks before the anniversary service, David Strope, interim national representative of the GARBC, visited the church. He spoke during the morning worship service and presented Regular Baptist Ministries.
