Connecting through Cooking

By October 24, 2025No Comments

Young adulthood “is a unique time of life” as young people “transition into independent living and find [their] place in society and in the Body of Christ,” says Judy King, a member of Breesport (New York) Baptist Church and wife of Brian King, executive director of the Northeast Fellowship.

Having good friends who share your faith and values is important in that stage of life. “But sometimes it’s hard to make those connections,” she says. So she introduced Cooking with Friends.

With the help of seasoned church cooks, anyone from the church age 18–30 (including high school graduates, college students, singles, and young married couples) and friends from other churches can explore tried-and-true recipes together step by step.

Each monthly two-hour class involves the students preparing and enjoying recipes, then enjoying fellowship time afterward. Also included: “a door prize drawing of something to boost your kitchen gadget collection.”

“Cooking with Friends welcomes the novice or nervous cook, but it does not exclude those who are already comfortable around the stove,” Judy says.

“Our hope is that Cooking with Friends will encourage wholesome fun and friendship around good food, connect older and younger people in the church, and promote confidence in cooking for yourself as well as for others in need.”
