Walter Spieth, Missionary and Pastor

LAGRANGE, Ohio—Walter Spieth, a missionary and pastor for 73 years, died Aug. 5. He was 93.

Spieth graduated from Philadelphia College of the Bible in 1943. He greatest joy was preaching the Word of God. He served as a missionary with Baptist Mid-Missions in St. Vincent in the West Indies, as well as Guyana. “Walter and Annetta Spieth opened Guyana for Baptist Mid-Missions in 1954,” says Baptist Mid-Missions. “They established Baptist churches in Georgetown and in two Indo Guyanese communities.”

Spieth spent the remainder of his ministry stateside, serving as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Lake Station, Indiana, and Beth-el Baptist Church, Elyria, Ohio; interim associate pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Chatfield, Minnesota, when the church was planning an expansion; and associate pastor of First Baptist Church of Lagrange, where he remained a member after his retirement at age 92.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Annetta; his children, Jean Dalton, Ralph, and Ronald; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Lagrange, with visitation taking place Tuesday, Aug. 9, 5:00–8:00 p.m., and the funeral on Aug. 10 at 11 a.m.
