Walden Askren, Visitiation Pastor

MUSCATINE, Iowa—Walden Askren, a pastor for more than 60 years, died on Jan. 19, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a short battle with pneumonia and complications. He was 81.

He graduated from Northwestern Bible College, Minneapolis, Minn., in 1953 and Western Conservative Baptist Seminary in 1957. For more than six decades he was a pastor in Minnesota, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, and Iowa. In the last 18 years he served multiple congregations in eastern Iowa as interim pastor, preacher, and calling pastor. He was currently visitation pastor at Walnut Park Baptist Church, Muscatine, Iowa.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and watching sports, but his greatest passion was seeing people come to Jesus Christ for salvation and restoration. He eagerly served to the very end, having preached the Sunday before he entered the hospital.

Walden was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Jud and Rilla; two sisters, Wanda Russell and Wilma Ballard; an infant son, Neil Askren; and an adult daughter, Karen Wood.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline; children, Doug, Linda Boyd, Phil, Wes, and Stan; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Lyle, and several nieces and nephews.
