With the Lord

Sonja Walter, Missionary

By July 9, 2014No Comments

CORNING, Iowa—Sonja Walter, a faithful volunteer at Iowa Regular Baptist Camp, died June 18. She was 75.

Sonja was born on her family’s farm north of Corning, Iowa. Her family attended a nearby Lutheran church, and it was during her confirmation that she realized that her faith must be a personal faith. She understood that she must accept Christ’s work on the cross for her salvation.

Sonja married Donald Walter on April 14, 1957. Together they established their home on the farm that had been in the Walter family for many years. Along with being a homemaker, Sonja taught children’s classes at Grace Baptist Church in Corning; Iowa Regular Baptist Camp, Ventura, Iowa; and Rio Grande Bible Institute, Edinburg, Texas.

After over 30 years of farming, Sonja and Don both desired to commit more time to serving the Lord, so in 1987 they were commissioned by Grace Baptist Church as home missionaries. They served for over 25 years at Rio Grande Bible Institute in the winter and Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in the summer. They also volunteered at Faith Baptist Bible College, Ankeny, Iowa.

Sonja is survived by her husband, Donald; two daughters, Nancy Garwick and Carol Tustin; a son, David; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa Regular Baptist Camp for a laundry room remodel in memory of Sonja.
