George Whitman, Pastor Emeritus

George P. Whitman, pastor emeritus of Latham Bible Baptist Church, Latham, N.Y., died on April 9. He was 86.

George was raised in Broadalbin, N.Y., where he was educated in a one-room schoolhouse, and later furthered his education at Practical Bible Training School.

His 53 years of ministry included pastoring churches in Mosiertown, Pa.; Edinboro, Pa.; Carlisle and New Berlin, N.Y.; and Latham Bible Baptist Church, where he served for 27 years, retiring in 1999.

In 1979 he led in the founding of Latham Christian Academy. More recently, through his Pastoral Helps Ministry, he helped renew a church in Sidney Center, N.Y. Pastor Whitman was also invited, on several occasions, to deliver the opening session prayer for the New York State Legislature in Albany.

Many may recall his weekly radio broadcast Echoes of Faith on radio station WLFH in Little Falls, N.Y., and Moments with Your Bible on WHAZ in Troy, N.Y.

Dedicating his life to the Lord’s service, George counseled many people to know Christ as their Savior.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, John, Joyce, and Lewis Whitman, Esther Farrell, and Freda Frasier.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean; his sons and daughters, Fred, Lois Murray, Duane, Rebecca Bice, James, Dorcas McKinney, and Dwight; his  brother and sister, Leon Whitman and Ruth Richards; 23 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
