Clarence A. Nickell Jr., Longtime Missionary

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Clarence A. Nickell Jr., 78, died on July 30, 2011.

After serving as a missionary in Brazil with Baptist Mid-Missions for 40 years, Clarence, instead of retiring, “retreaded,” as he continued to serve the Lord, says Clear Lake Baptist, Lakeport, Calif., one of the Nickells’ supporting churches. C. A., as he was better known, preached as a guest speaker and for pulpit supply when Southern California churches were without pastors. Annually he returned to Brazil for a couple of months each year to preach and teach. In Brazil he visited the four churches that he and his wife, Thelma, helped plant, and visited Parana Baptist Bible Institute, which they helped establish and which was one of two seminaries where they taught for many years.

He was survived by his wife, Thelma; three children, Sharon, John, and Gary; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Wilma Woody and June Wilbanks.
