Red and Blue Sunday

PAVILION, N.Y.—The First Baptist Church of Pavilion, N.Y., has awarded the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office the 2007 Faithful Community Servant Award, part of the church’s annual “Red and Blue Sunday” held in honor of local service organizations.

The church began the event in 2004 to recognize community officials, especially police officers, firefighters, and first responders. This year the church gave 28 certificates to community servants who attended the event. After the morning service, the church provided a dinner and hosted an afternoon service with Chaplain John Murdoch as guest speaker.

“Each year we invite all the community, town, county, state and federal officials to a special service where we give them a certificate, recognition and a round of applause,” said Pastor Phil Green, who volunteers as a chaplain for the sheriff’s department. “We also started giving a special award, the Faithful Community Servant Award, which has a plaque to go along with it.” Green noted that previous recipients have been the Pavilion Town Board and the Pavilion Volunteer Fire Department.
