ANKENY, Iowa—When Chris Hindal, director of GARBC International Ministries, presented the great needs of Haiti to Ankeny Baptist Church last June, the congregation immediately got to work planning a trip to minister to this nation that was devastated by an earthquake in January 2010.

A group of 16 adults traveled to Haiti March 9–17, bringing to fruition the yearlong preparations of the entire church. Children in Awana were challenged with a contest to bring in toothpaste, soap, and shampoo for children residing in My Father’s House, an orphanage run by Prédestin Hérard, president of the Association des Englises Evangeliques Baptistes d’ Haiti, an IPFBM partner. The church family also decided to send a blanket to every child, so several women in the church sewed these throughout the year, incorporating the help of some girls from the Iowa Juvenile Home. When the missions team discovered that several boys at the orphanage did not have beds to sleep on, they purchased and assembled beds. Then social media caught the vision of Ankeny Baptist’s trip, and donations started pouring in from individuals and groups outside the church.

Along with visiting orphans, the team from Ankeny Baptist helped in the rebuilding of the 17 churches in our partnership association that were damaged by the earthquake. Part of the team helped ABWE builder, Dave Manore, at one of the construction sites by digging and pouring the foundation of a church. Other teams are set to help in these building projects throughout the year.
