Mens-Conf1CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa—Blair Ridge Baptist Church hosted its Fifth Annual Men’s Leadership Conference Feb. 22. Pastor Ulysses Bestey of Faith Fellowship Baptist Church, Kansas City, Mo., addressed the theme “Leading Like Jesus.”

The 60 men in attendance, representing several Iowa churches, started the day with breakfast at 7:30. Then Pastor Bestey brought three messages using the word “leadership” as an acronym.

The conference paid particular attention to Matthew 4:18–20: “And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed Him.”

Pastor Troy Weigert of Blair Ridge Baptist says, “During His earthly ministry, Jesus was a leader of men. Jesus is the One we follow today; He is our leader. God’s will for men is that we would become more and more like Jesus in every area of life, including how we lead.”

Pastors Weigert and Bestey, along with Pastor Mike Hess of Calvary Baptist Church, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, led workshops: “How to Develop a Biblical Mind-set Toward Masculine Servanthood” (Hess), “Practical Leadership” (Bestey), and  “Leadership and Relationships” (Weigert).

The conference ended around 4:00 p.m. Since then, several men have shared that God used the conference to encourage and challenge them.
