Iowa Moms on a Mission

DES MOINES, Iowa—A team of moms from Saylorville Baptist Church have sponsored their annual Wee Ones Care & Share program, an evangelistic outreach designed to meet the physical and spiritual needs of less fortunate women and their children in Central Iowa. Several other Des Moines area churches also participated, along with the sponsorship of local businesses.

The ministry began three years ago when God began laying the foundation for the ministry. Four moms who were meeting for Bible study could barely imagine that God would use them to set His plan in motion for Wee Ones Care & Share. The group saw their purpose outlined clearly in Proverbs 31:20—opening their arms and extending their hands to the needy.

“God gave us eyes to see the needs of women in our area and hearts to share the gospel,” said Sara Wille, Wee Ones Care & Share cofounder and member of Saylorville Baptist Church. “We began collecting baby items to distribute during an event where we could connect women with items to meet their physical needs, but more importantly connect them with Jesus.”

In 2007, the program’s first year, 61 families attended the event and three individuals trusted Christ as their savior. Fast-forward to Sept. 27, 2008, when the event had grown nearly threefold. More than 600 people from 188 families attended the event and heard the gospel. Seventeen individuals made salvation decisions and another 37 expressed interest in follow-up Bible studies.

During the event, each family was paired with a volunteer who shared the gospel and read from the Bible. Every family left with a devotional Bible, a toddler Bible, and many more items, including personal care items, clothing, blankets, bottles, diapers, and one large item like a crib or car seat.

“There our numerous organizations and churches dedicated to helping the disadvantaged, but few with a Gospel-centered focus,” said Pat Nemmers, pastor of Saylorville Baptist. “Wee Ones is meeting a great physical need and the spiritual needs of hurting families.”

Volunteers at Wee Ones Care & Share

Wee Ones Care & Share—A Partnership for Outreach pooled the services and resources from the hosting church, Saylorville Baptist, as well as several area partner churches—including First Baptist (Eldora), Slater Baptist Church (Slater), and Willow Creek Baptist Church (Des Moines)—and several local women’s organizations and consignment stores. More than 100 volunteers assembled to meet the physical and spiritual needs of everyone who attended the event.
