Pastor Shares Personal Insight on Suffering

Pastor Ron Kenney speaks at First Baptist, Brooklyn, Mich.

BROOKLYN, Mich.—First Baptist Church hosted the fall gathering of the Southern Michigan Association of Regular Baptist Churches Sept. 23.

Ron Kenney, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Battle Creek, spoke on John 9, where Jesus’ disciples encounter a man born blind. The disciples ask that man, “Who sinned: this man or his parents?” And Jesus answers, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

For Ron, this Scripture passage came into focus this summer when he was diagnosed with cancer. He shared with the group the opportunities he has had to witness to friends, family, and medical staff through his experience. But he says the most significant lesson he has learned through this ordeal is just how much he is loved—by his family, his church, and God.

One Bible verse that encourages him is 2 Corinthians 1:3–4: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

Ron knows that God can use him, through his suffering, to be a blessing to someone else who might also be suffering. He asked the group to pray for wisdom, strength, and more witnessing opportunities as he continues his chemo treatments.
