Meal Kit Distribution Serves Church’s Neighbors

WILKES-BARRE, Pa.—Restored Church says it is “in the city, for the city.” To serve its city April 19, the church distributed 1,100 meal kits to 900 people. The church thanks the 40 volunteers, led by church member Pete Miller, for making the “emergency food distribution a huge success.”

The church had wanted to help residents who are struggling to afford food in the midst of hardships due to the coronavirus. A few connections put the church in touch with the Pennsylvania National Guard, which gave the church meal kits to distribute. On the day of the distribution, volunteers, wearing masks and gloves, carried the meal kits to individuals and families waiting in their cars on the church’s curb from 3:00 to 5:00.

The food distribution is just one way Restored Church is fulfilling its mission to “be actively involved in the life of the city in order to show the love of Jesus in reality rather than theory.”

A few weeks earlier, the church created Neighborhood Help cards to help its congregation “safely love and serve their neighbors during this crisis.” The cards included space for a church member’s name, phone number, and address and the offer to pick up shopping items, purchase supplies, or give a phone call. The church emailed or mailed the cards to its members, and those members left the cards on their neighbors’ doors.

“There are a lot of people who are hurting; there are a lot of people who are searching for hope,” says Pastor Tim Walker. “We have the opportunity to really show them how the hope of Jesus has made a difference in our lives.”
