Corabelle Stowell, wife of the late Joseph Stowell II, died on March 26. She was 94 and had been living near her daughter in Hampton, Tenn.
She served with her husband during his pastorates in Michigan, Ohio, and New Jersey. The longest ministry was at First Baptist Church, Hackensack, N.J., where they ministered for 20 years. In 1969 Dr. Stowell was elected to serve as the GARBC’s national representative, a position he held for 10 years. The Stowells retired to Carol Stream, Ill., and were married for 69 years before Joseph passed away in 2007.
“People have to see in your home a happy marriage—devoted to one another and to the Lord and His work,” she said in a 2001 Baptist Bulletin interview. “And you have to have a pastor’s heart. Paul said in Philippians, ‘I have you in my heart.’ You have to have a big heart to do that with people’s sorrows, quirks, problems—and their joys. You can never get away from it!”
She is survived by three children, Hannah (Clifton) Jensen of Hampton, Tenn.; Margaret (R. William) Wheeler of Cedarville, Ohio; and Joseph M. (Martha Bennett) Stowell III of Grand Rapids, Mich.
The family has planned a private service in Colon, Mich., on Saturday, March 31. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family in care of Dr. Joseph Stowell III, Cornerstone University, 1001 East Beltline Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Stowell Memorial Camper Scholarship Fund, Doe River Gorge Camp, 220 Doe River Gorge Rd., Hampton, TN 37658.
