Events at Des Moines Church Build Community

Saylorville Church, Des Moines, Iowa, hosted a marriage conference February 9–10.

Staff members and lay leaders from the church served as the speakers and Q and A panelists. In four main sessions and two breakout sessions they addressed communication; forgiveness; Biblical leadership; finances; parenting; praying as a family; and spiritual, emotional, and physical intimacy.

The church is “thankful for so much wisdom” from these speakers.

A week earlier, on February 3, Saylorville Church hosted a men’s breakfast. Gathering in the church’s Coffee Cove, the men heard from Kyhl Pearson, men’s ministry director at Saylorville Church.

Wearing a shirt with the words “Ask me hard questions,” Kyhl taught how “David responded when confronted with hard questions, what that meant for his life, and what it should mean for [the men’s lives].”

The men’s ministry this year will be talking about asking each other hard questions. Asking and receiving hard questions is part of choosing community over comfort.

“Community is a core value here at Saylorville,” Kyhl says. “We say that we are better together.”

Women from the church are now looking forward to their own event, called Meet Me for Game Night, on the evening of February 19. A wide variety of games—for every “game personality,” the church says—will be available. Or women can just enjoy catching up with friends and meeting new ones.

“There is no better way to spend a cold winter night than munching on appetizers [and] yummy dessert, sipping on warm drinks, and getting to have some fun with other women,” the event’s organizers say.

As Kyhl points out, community is a core value at Saylorville Church. And each of these events furthered the church’s goal of providing a sense of community, particularly for believers. If we are believers, God has adopted us into His family, so we should share life with His children, the church says. Followers of Jesus don’t need to walk alone.
