Why Did God Send an Angel to Mary to Tell Her That She Was Going to Have a Baby?

Q.

Why did God send an angel to Mary to tell her that she was going to have a baby?

A.
In Bible times God often used angels to take messages to people. In fact, the word “angel” in the languages of the Bible means “messenger.” Mary needed to know about God’s divine plan for her to be the mother of Jesus. Thus God used the angel Gabriel to take this message to Mary.

Luke 1 also tells us that God sent Gabriel to give the message to Elizabeth and Zacharias that they would be having a son, John.

God also seems to have a special ministry for angels in regard to children, including their birth. Jesus said concerning little children, “In heaven their [the little children’s] angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). Some Bible scholars see this passage as support for the belief that children, if not believers in general, have guardian angels (see also Hebrews 1:14).
