Abby Johnson with Cindy Lambert
SaltRiver (Tyndale House), 267 Pages, Hardcover, $22.99

Copublished with Focus on the Family, this gripping new book tells the story of Abby Johnson, who made national news in late 2009 when she left Planned Parenthood, the leading U.S. abortion provider, and joined the Coalition for Life. Notes Abby at the beginning of the book, “You are about to enter my journey from naive college girl to director of a Planned Parenthood clinic to advocate for families in crisis, including the unborn members of those families.”

She had been working as director of her local Planned Parenthood for a number of years. But one day she was asked to fill in on the team that performed the abortions. Via ultrasound Abby saw what was happening to the little unborn baby, witnessed the mother’s trauma, and suffered mentally and emotionally herself following the procedure.

The rest of the story deals with her rocky journey out of PP, the organization’s reaction to her departure, and her revelations of what she had discovered to be untrue. In an attempt at fairness, Abby points out that many people she once worked with are sincere and mean well, though they are deceived. She also found that some antiabortionists can be “treacherous and foolish and deceptive” too, certainly a call for pro-lifers to examine their hearts and be Christlike in their attitudes and actions.
