As a volunteer chaplain for our local fire department, I have witnessed many things our public servants deal with day by day. It was my desire during a Sunday morning service to honor and encourage those who are faithful in serving our community.

When inquiring of the fire and police chiefs, I found them not only willing to attend but helpful in distributing the invitations to their departments’ personnel. We invited full-time and part-time employees and their families to our Sunday morning service in which we honored the departments and then to a dinner following the service. Our church drafted and adopted a resolution that was read aloud and presented to each chief. Every firefighter and police officer received a New Testament specifically printed for their occupations (available from International Bible Society) I delivered the message “The Greatest Servant” from Philippians 2. Seventy-two visitors, including fifteen police officers and twenty-three firefighters, attended the service. The ladies of the church provided a wonderful dinner. The departments expressed their heartfelt appreciation. Our church has opened the door for future ministry with these public servants.
