Pastor Guy G. Godfrey, 91, an ardent witness for Christ who established five California churches, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Dec. 11, 2011.

He was born to Clifford and Birdie Godfrey Aug. 21, 1920, in Mixon Valley, Ark. After his high school years in Waldron, Ark., he attended Arkansas Polytechnic College in Russellville.

In 1940 Guy married his high school sweetheart, Gayle Muroney. During WWII, he served in the navy and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He then attended Los Angeles Baptist College, graduating magna cum laude in 1948, and continuing for some time at the seminary. During school, he pastored Bethany Baptist Church of East Los Angeles and, while there, helped form Immanuel Baptist Church of Alhambra and two other churches in La Puente and Buena Park.

In 1962 Guy became burdened to start a church in the San Diego area, forming Immanuel Baptist and leading it into the GARBC. Immanuel merged with another church in 1972 and became Jericho Road Baptist in La Mesa. After 12 years there, he helped churches in Missoula, Mont., and Carpinteria, Calif. He then established Faith Baptist, Atascadero, and served there for 20 years. His last move was back to El Cajon, where he attended Jericho Road Baptist and was a blessing to the congregation.

Godfrey is survived by his wife, Gayle; three daughters, La June (Laurens) Edwards, BettiSue (Jodie) Perkins, and Theresa (Tom) Paschall; eight grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
