Prayer Concern: Pastor Don LeMaster and Meredith LeMaster

Posted June 30, 2008 in GARBCnews, PrayerLink

Don LeMaster, pastor of Brooklyn Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York, is undergoing radiation treatment for a malignant tumor in his upper chest. Please pray for the effectiveness of the treatment, which will be followed by surgery and possibly further radiation. Pastor Don states, “I have three passionate desires as I go through this experience - that Jesus Christ will be magnified, God’s people will be edified, and lost people will be evangelized.”

Pastor Don’s daughter, Meredith Lee, came through colon surgery and removal of a cancerous thyroid and gall bladder remarkably . However she contracted a serious staph infection. Please pray for Meredith as she recovers from the surgery and infection and continues to battle cancer. She will have more chemotherapy when her body has healed sufficiently.

Prayer: Churches affected by Flooding

Posted June 11, 2008 in GARBCnews, PrayerLink

Pray for churches in Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota that have experienced damage in church facilities or in family homes due to flooding. Towns along the Cedar River in Iowa; i.e., Cedar Falls, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, are experiencing record crests and flooding. If you know of churches in the Association that are experiencing flood damage, please email John Greening, GARBC National Representative. The Resource Center has received the following reports:

Families from First Baptist Church of New Hartford, IA, experienced devastation to their homes due to a tornado recently. Now flood waters in the town are an issue. Pastor Ben Epley and his family were evacuated from their home, as were many other New Hartford families.

Fellowship Baptist Church in Des Moines, IA, sits adjacent to a levee for the Des Moines River. The river is predicted to crest at a level that could swallow a portion of the church. A section of the church parking lot has already collapsed. Homes of people from Association churches in Des Moines have been affected as well.

Faith Baptist Church, Mason City, IA, had flooding in their church basement. The Mason City community has been without drinking water and sewage services for several days. Some church people have evacuated their homes.

In our Association family, when one church hurts, we all hurt. Let’s keep these churches in our prayers.

Prayer Concerns: Pastor Schatz, Ruby Hol

Posted June 9, 2008 in GARBCnews, PrayerLink

Dale Schatz, Pastor of Heritage Baptist Church, Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Chairman of the Arkansas Council of Five, recently underwent quadruple bypass surgery. Pray for Pastor Dale and for his wife, Gwen, during this time of recovery and for the ministry of their mission church. Praise the Lord for His protection of Pastor’s life as Dale was unaware of the extensive blockages prior to surgery.

Ruby Hol

Continue to pray for seven-month-old Ruby Hol and her parents, Pastor Trent and Lydia Hol of Willow Creek Baptist Church, West Des Moines, Iowa. Ruby is receiving extensive chemotherapy for Neuroblastoma. Pray that Ruby will respond positively to treatment and uphold Pastor Trent and Lydia as they care for Ruby and seek to be good testimonies to medical personnel.

Ariel is making a special trip from the Philippines to minister at our Annual Conference. Take advantage of this enriching learning opportunity, Tuesday, June 24, 9:30 a.m. until noon. Operation Love - 2008 VBS Missions Offering

Operation Love will direct offerings collected from churches using RBP’s 2008 Dino Detectives VBS program to the many orphans in Africa and Asia.  Some children were orphaned by war and others lost their parents by rampant disease .  If you choose to adopt this project, be sure to go to www.garbcinternational.org  and click on the Dino Detectives image.  Four short videos are posted to assist you in promoting this project to your children.
Help Myanmar Victims

Chris Hindal writes, “Over the past two years as I have talked about the International Ministries of the GARBC, I have repeatedly told congregations that I am proud to be part of an Association of churches that has a heart of compassion. I have cited the extraordinary giving that reached out to the tsunami victims in Thailand, as well as to our own countrymen along the Mississippi Gulf Coast who suffered the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Myanmar, like Thailand, is overwhelmingly Buddhist. We must take back the ground for the cause of Christ. We must make a timely response. Everyday that passes brings more suffering. Certainly, believers in GARBC churches will want to be involved in this significant opportunity for sharing the love of God.” You can put your compassion into action by donating now to the International Ministries Emergency Relief.

Pray for Sister Church in Iowa

Recently a tornado touched down in the community of New Hartford, Iowa. The path of the tornado hit a few blocks away from a sister church in our Association, First Baptist Church. Praise the Lord that the church and parsonage were spared, but many people in the community lost their homes, including three families from First Baptist Church. Pastor Ben Epley conveys, “the need for our families is to find rental living, as they look for more permanent residences.” Pray for these families-the Swailes, Bennetts, and Hutchinsons as they seek housing and reestablish their households, and for the ministry of the church in the community during this time of need. Another note of praise–eight sister churches provided encouragement by assisting with the clean-up. Churches caring about churches is what makes the Association a wonderful family! (Read more about the tornado and clean-up on the Baptist Bulletin website.)

Defending Your Faith

Ask Them Why by Jay Lucas, published by RBP, has been in such demand that the book is in its second printing. Ask Them Why provides Biblical answers to the common questions: Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? Does life have a purpose? Does God exist? This exciting new apologetics book is based on the technique of asking people why they believe what they believe and helping them see the problems with their own views. This book, and its two audio CDs of dramatizations of the encounters, provides a valuable study for individuals, small groups, or Sunday School classes.
