Urgent Prayer Requests

Posted November 21, 2007 in GARBCnews, PrayerLink

Cyclone in Bangladesh
Jim Long, ABWE administrator for South Asia, sent this message on Monday, November 19.
“Tropical Cyclone Sidr is roaring up the Bay of Bengal with winds of over 160 miles per hour. We are not at the center of the expected landfall. However, we are close enough that we are expecting high winds, heavy rains, and flooding. The city of Chittagong has many problems with the drainage system, so flooding happens very fast. We would ask you to pray for safety from the storms and flooding for our church members, colleagues, and neighbors and that the Lord would give us wisdom and spiritual fruit from our response to needs that arise from this storm. Thank you for standing with us in prayer in this time of need.”

Need to Sell Homes
The current real estate market slowdown has created a severe hardship for several GARBC Resource Center staff members who are in urgent need of selling homes. Please pray for the prompt sale of properties in Ames, Iowa; Flint, Michigan; Waterford, Michigan; Fort Meyers, Florida; and the greater Chicago area.

Council of 18 Meets

Posted November 15, 2007 in GARBCnews

Twenty-five leaders from the Council of Eighteen and the GARBC administrative staff met November 12-14 to work on proactive endeavors to assist the Association’s ministry to churches. During the meetings at the GARBC Resource Center in Schaumburg, Illinois, the committees of Conference Planning, Finance, Personnel, Policy, Recruitment and Retention, Church Assistance, Resolutions, Youth, Chaplaincy, International Ministries, and Publications accomplished much work and future planning. Thrilling reports of God’s working through their ministries were given by John Greening, national representative; Jim Vogel, associate national representative; Michael Nolan, director of operations; Chris Hindal, director of international ministries; and John Murdoch, director of chaplaincy services. The tenor of the sessions was upbeat and forward looking.

The Council considered two major initiatives related to church planting and perpetuating involvement in the Association. The desire to pursue the goal of multiplying churches in the GARBC through church planting was affirmed by all leaders. Council members and the administrative staff committed to praying daily, asking God to stir a grassroots movement of church planting within our Fellowship. Planning is under way to promote this Biblical imperative.

Another important initiative that was addressed in an extended Council session involved younger pastors in our Fellowship. bb-intext-scottg.jpgAssociate Pastor Scott Greening, who has a burden for this issue as a younger pastor himself, was asked to attend the meetings and share his perspective. His presentation included a proposed strategy to reach out to younger pastors and incorporate them proactively into Association activities both locally and nationally. Following a time of discussion, the Council took unanimous action to pursue this effort as part of our ongoing commitment to recruit and retain churches and their pastors in the Fellowship. Jim Vogel will be working with Scott and other pastors in the coming months to implement specific plans in the area of this strategic initiative.

Council members returned to their individual ministries with a deep commitment to our Fellowship and the motivation to see great things happen by God’s enablement.

Putting Others First: November 2007

Express Appreciation with a Gift
Giving a gift is a great way to express appreciation. As we come to the end of this year, consider showing your appreciation for the ministry of the GARBC by giving a Christmas gift or by starting or increasing your support for the Association. Your financial support enables the Association and its different ministries to expand its outreach in the new year.

You Can Help Meet a Great Need
“95 to 100 million Americans are unchurched,” reported BGCWorld. “Not one U.S. city has a greater church population than ten years ago. Ten churches close every day.”

These sobering statistics show the great need for church planting. You can participate in planting GARBC churches by supporting Baptist Builders Club. Contact Michael Nolan to schedule a presentation in your church. Make Baptist Builders Club a part of your church budget for 2008.

We Are Searching…
The Baptist Bulletin will highlight the ministry of a crisis pregnancy center in the January issue. We would like to include a listing of churches in the GARBC that have a ministry to unwed mothers. This ministry could be in the form of assisting a crisis pregnancy center or providing a pantry of baby items for unwed or financially needy mothers in the community. If your church has this type of ministry, please send Norm Olson the name of your church, your church’s location, and the type of ministry in which your church participates.
