SoulFood_inlineFORT MYERS, Fla.—Students attending Vacation Bible School at Daniels Road Baptist Church learned to help others through a missions project that benefited their community. The church used the Arrow Island: Choosing God’s Way VBS program, published by Regular Baptist Press, July 7–11 and incorporated its own Soul Food Island missions project to collect canned goods for the church’s food pantry.

VBS was open to students in kindergarten through sixth grade. To spur excitement about the project, the church held a competition between the boys and girls to see who could collect the most food. The girls won the competition and the opportunity for one girl to throw a pie in the face of Jacob Hipkins, who performed humorous skits during the week as “Tracker Jack.”

The students’ donations of canned and other nonperishable goods totaled 600, doubling last year’s total.

“The kids were so excited about the competition and about helping others,” says Pastor Erik Bennett. “This was a great opportunity for DRBC to teach the kids about giving back to the community.”

Daniels Road Baptist Church started its Soul Food Ministry food pantry in 2009 to address increasing community needs. (Read “Church Distributes Food for Body and Soul.”) Partnering with the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Fort Myers that donates perishables, Soul Food Ministry serves about 80 to 100 families every week, which means the ministry needs 150 cans a week to assist the families in need. The food pantry is open every Friday from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
