150th Anniversary Picnic in Guthrie Center, Iowa

GUTHRIE CENTER, Iowa—First Baptist Church celebrated 150 years of ministry. The events began with a Saturday afternoon picnic on the church lawn. The group moved inside after the meal for a time of testimonies from former members and friends and to enjoy special musical numbers. Verl Paullin, almost 90, was recognized as the “Oldest Male Member of the Church.”

On Sunday, five former pastors spoke during the services. Pastor Phil Lacy (1958–1962) spoke in the first service, during which Tabitha VanUnen, 10, was honored as the “Youngest Member of the Church.”

Pastor Jeff Holub (1987–1996) preached in the later service. Special music was provided by an alumni choir, a mixed quartet, and a men’s group, who ministered throughout the day. Velma Plaine, 90, was recognized as the “Oldest Female Member of the Church.”

In an afternoon service, Pastor Paul Cutler (1997–2002), Youth Pastor Leo Young, and Youth Pastor Chip Thompson shared testimonies of their time at the church. Lila Moore, who became a member in 1940, received the “Longest Standing Member” award.

Other highlights included a history of the church in pictures, letters read from people who could not attend the celebration, and many historical items from the church that were on display, including a quilt that ladies made in 1963 featuring names of church members embroidered on it.

The congregation gives thanks to all who made the celebration special in remembering the faithfulness of God during these 150 years.
