Spiritual Maturity: The Road to Wonderland

BRUCE BAKER, Grace Acres Press, 376 Pages, Paper, $19.95

As most of us saw so graphically in Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, the Christian life is a journey to a destination. Before writing his book, Baker looked diligently for a truly meaningful recent book on the principles of the Christian journey. Finding none that filled the bill, he wrote his own.

Baker uses intriguing pictures and analogies from several works of another well-known writer, Lewis Carroll, author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, to illustrate his points on experiencing the spiritual journey. For example, from the sixth chapter in Wonderland, we read, ” ‘Would you tell me, please which way I ought to walk from here?’ ‘That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,’ said the Cat. ‘I don’t much care where,’ said Alice. ‘Then it doesn’t matter which way you walk,’ said the Cat.” This quotation is used to introduce the principle that we must go in the right direction if we are to attain spiritual maturity.

The book has discussion questions after each chapter, along with Scripture and general indexes. Baker, a pastor in Michigan, is pursuing his PhD at Baptist Bible Seminary.
