When God calls us into His service, He often calls us to a specific place. We call it our Jerusalem. How do we best go about reaching and ministering in our Jerusalem? Do we just put up a sign and expect that people will come to us when they have a need?
A critical matter in ministering to your community is understanding the local culture and customs. When one pastor from the South began a new ministry in the northern part of Minnesota, he required all of the men to wear suits when they ushered or sang in the choir. Most of the men did not even own suits.
As the director of Project Jerusalem, I’d like to share what God has been teaching us about reaching our Jerusalem. It is our conviction that effective outreach ideas discovered on the front lines of new church planting can be fruitfully applied to older, established congregations as well.
As I look around my neighborhood, I see a variety of things. But the thing that I see the most is people who have not heard the good news of the gospel.
Among other requirements for the local church, evangelism, worship, edification, and fellowship are among the main priorities. Each area brings different challenges and blessings as they meld into the whole of ministry. Focusing on one of those areas, music has brought challenges and joys that have been important in our ministry to those who are in our Jerusalem.

G. Jeffrey MacDonald wrote an interesting piece in the New York Times last week concerning clergy and burnout.
